Chef's Bio
Chef Sonyka
Sonyka is a home trained cook who migrated from Jamaica to Brooklyn, New York as a small child. As a performance artist, she often incorporates cooked food into her live events for a delicious duo of performance and sustenance. Her menu consists of Jamaican national dishes and American soul food, which she has been trained in preparing for over 30 years. She earned her interdisciplinary Master of Arts degree from Goddard College during the pandemic. Her master's thesis incorporated stories of food from her world travels and the similarities in some of the dishes from West Africa and Jamaica such as rice and peas.
As a performance artist and educator, Sonyka uses food to raise awareness on the positive impact Black people have on culinary cultural practices. Her performance events often incorporate food staples such as fried chicken, macaroni & cheese, cornbread and jerk chicken where she serves a dual role as head chef and entertainer. She currently resides part time in Berlin and is being mentored by long time friend and chef Miranti Kisdarjono of Indonesia.
Please note: All dishes are prepared in a licensed home kitchen. To ensure quality and timely preparation, catering orders are limited to a maximum of 3 main meal options per event.
Larger or more complex orders may require additional planning time and coordination. Thank you for your understanding and support!
